Because of how photogenic our city is, a lot of couples decide to do engagement pictures in the spring to document their relationship (and hasten the release of their “save the date”).

Be wise: Four area photographers, Kir Tuben, Terri Baskin, Myron Fields, and Chris Ferenzi, provided their advice to Axios on how couples should approach an engagement photography in the capital.

But if you haven’t just gotten engaged, many of these pointers still apply to other kinds of photo shoots, so pay attention. Are they familiar with Washington, D.C.? Can they provide advice on permits? Have they previously shot at the site you want to use?

Availability of your wedding date – Will you want your photographer to take both your engagement and wedding photos? Make sure they are available on your special day. (Try to make reservations about a year in advance.)

Look at complete portfolios; don’t base your choice solely on a few images from a photographer’s website or Instagram.

Personality fit – Doing an interview beforehand can help you determine whether you two will get along and enjoy spending a lot of time together.

The Kennedy Center, the Georgetown waterfront (more of a neighborhood feel), all of the memorials, the National Cathedral gardens, the Portrait Gallery, Planet Word, sentimental places (the bar where you met, your favorite park, etc.), the National Arboretum, the Library of Congress.

Many photographers offer packages that allow for multiple locations and outfits, so you don’t have to choose just one.
