I’ve just spent hours looking for the best spring throw-on midi dresses

I really feel that midi dresses can be styled in a variety of ways and worn throughout the year, whether it be with a polo neck and knee-high boots, an oversized sweater, or wrap skirts worn undone like a flowy bohemian-style cardi. The midi dress, however, really comes into its own in the spring when our options are less about keeping warm under bundled layers and more about imaginative design. Just the thought of wearing a dress without tights has me picturing myself flocking among tufts of overgrown grass and having a picnic with pals.

One of the numerous draws of the spring midi dress is its effectiveness. You can get dressed from head to toe in one motion, leaving only the choice of outerwear and accessories. They are the ideal length to leave you feeling yet light enough to keep you through stickier temperatures on blustery days. The same is true for styling for day and night. Midi dresses and sneakers go together like bread and butter, and for evening attire, replace a coat with a jacket or longline blazer and slip-on heels. This style has been somewhat enhanced during the past few years. The proportions of fabric-heavy styles are being balanced by puff sleeves, perforated knits, slits, and cut-outs, and most of all, they’re timeless.

Expect to see midis this season in a rich, jewel-toned color scheme with plenty of florals. (Without them, spring fashion wouldn’t be the same.) Along with traditional neutrals, other popular colors this year include powder blue, burnt sienna, greens from emerald to chartreuse, and cocoa brown.
