At the 2023 Oscars, Angela Bassett earned a lot of affection despite losing.
The Best Supporting Actress contender for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever went popular on social media after people posted her restrained, straightforward response to Jamie Lee Curtis winning the award. (See the complete list of winners.)
Yet, her supporters defended her, complimenting Angela for being authentic at the awards ceremony on March 12.
She doesn’t always have to act just because she’s an actor, one user tweeted on March 13. “We may feel thrilled for Jamie Lee Curtis and sad for Angela Bassett at the same time. However, Angela Bassett is allowed to experience her feelings. This system is ineffective. “My heart breaks so bad for Angela Bassett like I know she wanted this for Chadwick so badly,” the commenter commented.
Yet, several people voiced optimism that the actress will one day win an Oscar. After all, it has been over 30 years since her What’s Love Got to Do with It nomination for an Oscar.
A user tweeted, “You can tell how much an Oscar would have meant to Jamie Lee Curtis from Angela Bassett’s reaction to her name being called. “She has always been great and always will be. I’d better go see her up there Shortly.”And the love Angela got wasn’t just virtual. While onstage, Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors took a moment to shoutout the superstar.
“Hey Auntie,” Michael said, with Jonathan adding, “We love you.”
