Being able to mingle with some of the world’s most well-known individuals is an exciting perk of dating a royal. But Meghan Markle already had a pretty impressive address book, so she didn’t need Prince Harry to introduce famous people to her social circle.

Meghan already knew a lot of smart, accomplished people because to her work as a charity volunteer and on the courtroom drama Suits, including tennis champion Serena Williams and Justin Trudeau of Canada.

But maybe one of her most unexpected relationships was with chat show guru Ellen Degeneres. And while you may have expected their first encounter to take place on an interview set or at a swanky Hollywood party, it actually happened at an animal rescue center, which was much less glamorous but much more memorable.

Without knowing who Meghan was, Ellen casually mentioned a name suggestion she had for one of the cute puppies. This comment ultimately changed the Duchess of Sussex’s life.

Prior to meeting Harry, Meghan wrote about the encounter on her blog The Tig a few years ago: “You follow Ellen Degeneres’ instructions when she gives them. like if Oprah gave you advice on a major life decision. You would act upon that as soon as you were able.

“Well, this is the tale of how a cute little rescue dog named Bogart got to be mine. Take him home, Ellen Degeneres said to me as she entered the room two years ago in Los Angeles, where I was sitting with a ten-week-old rambunctious puppy on my lap. Those three words changed my life forever.
